The Social Security Act (SSA) established Medicare and its Benefit Categories. The Medicare Durable Medical Equipment (DME) Benefit (sometimes, called DMEPOS for Durable Medical Equipment, Prosthetics, Orthotics, and Supplies) was established for provision of equipment and services for use by Medicare beneficiaries in their homes. Medicare Part B covers medically necessary DME prescribed by a Medicare physician and meeting specific criteria. Attention to Medicare beneficiary status in a hospital bed is particularly important because the Social Security Act established the Medicare Program with Part A and Part B services. In many hospitals, the physical location of a Medicare beneficiary may look the same for Part B observation status or Medicare Part A inpatient status. Knowing which status supports correct claim submission for medically necessary DMEPOS. Attention to the decision points covered in the article will help ensure proper payment is processed.
